View solution in original post. The utility does not show your PC as supported but it will work on any HP business desktop PC at least up to the Elite which came out last year. Has the location of this utility changed? I'm having the same issue and need to update the serial number on Z with replacement motherboard. BIOS allows me to change the number, but the internal number Reported by HP Advisor or auto-detect is still not maching my serial number stickers on the machine.
There is a major issue with the HP business support pages missing a ton of drivers, utilities, etc. Since I am not employed by nor do I represent HP, I don't know when they will restore the drivers to the support pages.
They are also supposedly getting rid of support files for any devices over 10 years old, which that utility is at least I just did a search of the HP business support site's entire driver section and that utility no longer shows up. I don't think that using that utility if it worked on the Z at all would resolve the online utility problem.
Though it is gone from the HP website, I googled the name and found it on a 3rd party website. I have zipped up and attached it below. I checked it for viruses and whatnot. Looks fine to me. However, this functionality is only available on Pentium 3 and later processors. Also on Pentium 4 and newer processors the instruction always returns 0x in all 4 registers. Later model Pentium 3's may also return 0x's. The feature was primarily aimed at copy protection, allowing software to be linked to specific processors. It did not go over well with the community, and lawsuits ensued. The feature was removed from late model P3's and all newer processors.
The feature is present in newer processors for compatibility reasons. In windows, I am sure there is a system call, In linux one could try "sudo lshw" but most kernels do not seem to support CPU serial numbers, and preliminary research seems to indicate that the general outrage against uniquely identifiable computers means that there is no perfect answer.
What are you trying to do? Almost certainly someone has done it before and it may be wise to reuse or emulate what they have done.
